The main thing in chiropractic is that your nervous system is the master system. Your nervous system is protected by the spinal column and your skull. The spinal cord runs all the way down through the bones of the spine, and then exiting in between the joints are these spinal nerves which connect up to every cell, tissue, and organ in your body.
If you understand the anatomy, that the nervous system controls every single cell, tissue, and organ in your body, then you can understand that if the bones of your spine misalign and pinch and irritate those nerves, that there is going to be disruption to the communication or the connection to those end organs or end cells or end muscles to the brain. If you disconnect something from the brain, it is not going to be under the brain’s control and the brain can’t run, regulate, or fix or tell it what to do. It’s all about the communication in the body.
If you want to look at back pain or neck pain, when those bones misalign, they pinch and irritate the nerves. Obviously, if we can adjust the spine, get the pressure off the nerves, the back pain, neck pain might go away, right? Very, very simple.
If a person comes in and they are having digestive issues or constipation as well, then when we eliminate the irritation to the nerves that go to the intestines or to the stomach, conceivably the loss of that irritation will improve the connection to the brain and allow the brain to run and regulate and actually heal whatever condition might be going on.
Understand that chiropractic doesn’t treat specific conditions, it just gets the pressure off the nervous system and allows your body to run and regulate itself properly, because your body was designed to be healthy. It’s not designed to be sick. It’s designed to run and regulate itself in a way that we don’t even have to think about it.
When we have a cough or a cold, our body’s hard at work, healing, running and regulating itself, and that does all that by the nervous system. But if you stop the nervous system from doing its job and interfere with the communication, that’s when the body will start to break down and take longer to heal and then you’ll be sicker longer, and that’s really what happened.
Chiropractic is more of a general way of keeping pressure off the nervous system to allow your body to function optimally. The better your body functions, the more equipped it is able to run, regulate and heal itself. And that in a nutshell is how chiropractic can affect almost any condition. If your nervous system is connected to it, then if we disconnect the nervous system, it’s not going to work. If I pull a leaf off a tree, that leaf is going to die and break down and go back to elemental form. If I stop the communication from the brain to a liver cell, that liver cell is likely going to die when it disconnects from the brain. So, keeping those connections keeps your body running, regulating and optimizes its health.
Chiropractic is a holistic approach in helping the body’s nervous system just to work at its optimum potential. It is not really designed to specifically treat this, that, or the other thing. When we get pressure off the nervous system, the body just runs better. That’s truly a holistic approach and that’s what chiropractic was founded on. It really wasn’t founded as a treatment for back pain or neck pain, and don’t get me wrong, I’m happy when Nancy’s neck pain goes away and Billy’s back pain goes away, but the truth is chiropractic enhances nervous system function, maximizes nerve function, which optimizes the body to run and regulate itself.
